Is This God or Just Me? Discerning God’s Voice in a Noisy Soul

Written by:

Dear Royalty,

There is a sacred tension every believer must eventually face:
That moment when you feel something strongly… but you’re not sure if it’s God, or just your own soul/desires speaking louder than your spirit.

We don’t often talk about this in church, but many of us have made decisions in the name of “God said” that were actually driven by fear, loneliness, ambition, or impatience. The worst part? Sometimes they work, for a while. But eventually, the cracks show. And when they do, we find ourselves asking:

“Did I follow God or did I follow my own voice wrapped in spiritual language?”

This post is not just for those seeking guidance, it’s for those seeking alignment. Because in this hour, God is calling His people into a level of sensitivity that requires more than goosebumps and emotional highs.

1. God’s Voice Doesn’t Compete – It Calls You Higher

God doesn’t shout to be heard.
He doesn’t rush you into panic decisions.
His voice does not sound like pressure, it sounds like peace.

So when you hear something in your heart, ask yourself:
Is this voice pulling me higher, or pushing me faster?
Because God doesn’t rush destiny. He aligns it.

If what you’re hearing leads you to anxiety, desperation, or the fear of missing out, it may not be God, it may be your emotions baptizing themselves in urgency.

2. The Soul Can Camouflage as the Spirit

This is where it gets deeper.

Your soul, your mind, will, and emotions is incredibly powerful. It’s been trained by experience, trauma, memory, and imagination. And if you’re not careful, your soul can speak in tongues.
It can prophesy your pain.
It can cloak survival as strategy.
It can mimic the tone of the Spirit because it knows what you want to hear.

That’s why discerning the voice of God starts with crucifying the voice of self……………..daily.
And that only happens in stillness.
In surrender.
In the secret place.

3. Confirmation is Not Just Agreement – It’s Alignment

Many people seek “confirmation” that sounds more like agreement than alignment.
They look for people, posts, or prophecies that echo what they already feel.

But true confirmation doesn’t just soothe your feelings, it anchors your faith.
It aligns you with God’s character, God’s timing, and God’s pattern.

If everyone you’re listening to is simply echoing your emotion, you’re not discerning, you’re surrounding yourself with emotional comfort.

Test what you’re hearing by who you’re becoming in the process.
Is this “word” making you more Christlike, more patient, more surrendered or more entitled?

4. God Speaks From a Place of Eternity, Not Emotion

Here is the mystery of God’s communication:
God speaks from eternity and sometimes, His Word won’t match your moment.

He may speak a “yes” that doesn’t make sense for another 3 years.
He may give you a vision your current season is completely unprepared for.
He may say “wait” when everything around you says “go.”

This is why prophetic people must become patient people.
Because discernment isn’t just about hearing the right thing, it’s about hearing it in the right season.

5. If It Requires You to Dismantle Godly Order, It’s Not God

God will never give you a “word” that asks you to betray His ways.
He won’t tell you to dishonor your leaders.
He won’t lead you into rebellion and call it “freedom.”
He won’t push you into manipulation and label it “strategy.”

The voice of God is holy.
It is rooted in order, honor, and fruit that lasts.

If what you’re hearing requires shortcuts, secrecy, or spiritual bypassing, pause. That may be your ambition disguised as anointing.

A Personal Pause

There have been times I thought God was speaking, but it was really my wounds screaming for relief.
There were moments I took steps in faith that were actually fueled by fear.
And the truth is, God still met me, not because I was right, but because I was His.

But I’ve learned now, with tears and time, that just because I feel it deeply doesn’t mean God said it clearly.
So I’ve returned to the place where the voice is pure:
Stillness. Surrender. Scripture.

YES, SCRIPTURE, THAT IS HIS WORD.

Final Wisdom: Discernment is Devotion, Not Just Decision-Making

Discerning God’s voice isn’t a magic trick for perfect choices.
It’s the fruit of daily communion.
It grows where worship is real.
It becomes clear where ego is crucified.

So if you’re wrestling with a decision today, don’t rush.
Silence the noise.
Lay your emotions at the altar.
Ask the Spirit of Truth to speak louder than your survival instincts.

And remember this:
God speaks to those who are willing to obey, not just those who are curious.

May your decisions reflect His voice, not just your volume.
May your life reveal His rhythm, not just your reason.
