Dear Royalty,
It’s an easy trap to fall into – trying to lead God.
You’ve been praying, fasting, believing for a breakthrough, and sometimes, in the quiet moments when God doesn’t seem to be answering fast enough, you take the reins. You start to tell God what He should do, when He should do it, and how He should do it. We’ve all been there, right? Trying to mold God into our plans, instead of waiting on Him to unfold His greater ones.
It’s a natural impulse. After all, you know your desires, your needs, your struggles. You’re navigating life, looking for direction. It seems like you should take charge. But here’s the reality: We don’t get to lead God. We were never meant to.
The Mistake of Leading God
When we try to lead God, we misunderstand the relationship He wants to have with us. It’s not about us being in control, pushing God to do our bidding. It’s about us trusting that His ways are higher, His timing is perfect, and His plans are always for our good.
Think about it. How many times have you found yourself praying, “God, I want this job,” or “God, give me a relationship now,” or even, “God, fix this situation immediately!”? You may think you’re being bold, even courageous, in these prayers. And yes, boldness is good, but the focus should always remain on His will.
Scripture reminds us:
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
— Isaiah 55:8-9 (NIV)
We often get frustrated when things don’t go the way we planned. But perhaps the real question is: Have we been leading God or letting Him lead us?
The Call to Follow, Not Lead
Following God requires faith. Real faith. Faith that says, “I trust that You know better than I do. I will follow Your lead, even when I don’t understand it.”
Take Abraham, for example. When God asked him to leave his home and journey to an unknown land, Abraham didn’t demand to know the destination or the plan. He followed God’s instructions, even though it didn’t make sense. His obedience wasn’t based on knowledge; it was based on trust.
God’s Word shows us that:
“The righteous person may have many troubles, but the LORD delivers him from them all.”
— Psalm 34:19 (NIV)
Abraham’s story wasn’t one of leading God. It was a story of surrender, of following God with all his heart, even when it seemed hard or uncertain.
This is what following God looks like – not knowing the next step, but knowing that you can trust the One leading you.
The Danger of Going Ahead of God
When you take charge of your own life, when you try to force things to happen according to your will, there’s a risk of running ahead of God.
In our fast-paced world, we often try to get ahead, believing that God is taking too long. We want to rush things. But rushing ahead of God can lead to missed opportunities, unintended consequences, or even unnecessary heartache. Look at King Saul in the Bible. He couldn’t wait for God’s timing, and he took matters into his own hands, which eventually led to his downfall.
God’s timing is never late. He doesn’t need us to speed things up for Him. His plans are perfect, and His purpose will always prevail.
Following God: A Journey of Trust
To follow God is to acknowledge that His plans are better than our own. And sometimes, following Him means stepping into the unknown, even when the path is unclear. It’s okay to not have all the answers. It’s okay to be uncertain about the future. Because when you follow Him, He promises to be your guide.
Jesus Himself said:
“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”
— Luke 9:23 (NIV)
This isn’t a call to passively wait for God to move. It’s a call to action.
Waiting on God is indeed an Act of faith. We must trust Him with every aspect of our lives. It’s a daily surrender. It’s a daily reminder that God’s path will lead us to where He wants us to be. This will happen even when it looks different than we imagined.
So, How Do You Follow God?
- Trust Him in the waiting.
Don’t try to rush your journey. God is working, even when you don’t see it. Trust Him with your timeline. - Seek His will, not your own.
Spend time in prayer, in His Word. Ask for His guidance. When you make decisions, ask yourself: Is this aligning with His will for my life? - Obey even when it doesn’t make sense.
Just like Abraham, follow God’s leading, even when you don’t understand the entire plan. His wisdom exceeds ours. - Be willing to let go.
Sometimes, following God means releasing things that we think we need or deserve. But His plans are always for our good. - Rest in His promises.
Remember, He is with you every step of the way. He promises never to leave you, and He will guide you into His perfect plan.
Let Go and Let God Lead
So, dear reader, I encourage you today; stop trying to lead God. Instead, choose to follow Him, trusting that He sees what you don’t, knows what you can’t, and has a purpose far greater than what you could ever imagine.
God is not in the business of following our plans. We are in the business of following His.
Will you let go and trust His leadership today?
